A Matter of Honor tells the fictional story of a young American’s coming of age in a tumultuous time. The author introduces Richard Cutler, a Massachusetts teenager with strong family ties to England, who ships out with John Paul Jones to avenge the death of his brother Will, imprisoned by the Royal Navy and flogged to death for striking an officer.
First as a midshipman aboard Ranger, then as a lieutenant aboard Bonhomme Richard, Cutler plays a critical role in such events as the sea battle with HMS Drake off the coast of Ireland, Benjamin Franklin’s negotiations with the French in Paris, the raid of American marines on the English seaport of Whitehaven, and the famous battle with HMS Serapis in the North Sea.
Within the pages of A Matter of Honor are romance and friendships, complicated responsibilities, and ties involving a family that spans both sides of the Atlantic and both sides of the war. Told from several points of view, this story is filled with fresh insights into how a weak and disunited Colonial America was able to prevail against the world’s most powerful nation.
Sailors, reenactors and historians will appreciate William C. Hammond’s attention to historical detail in all facets of 18th century culture. But, especially, his descriptions of life aboard the sailing ships of the era create vivid scenes of life and warfare at sea.
This is the first volume in a series of maritime novels set in the early years of the United States. Fans of nautical and historical novels will want to follow the adventures of Richard Cutler in this novel and in subsequent volumes.
