The Painter Collection includes many unique and beautiful items created particularly by the native peoples of the Plains and Northern Woodlands. Furthermore, it is unusual in that many of these beautifully decorated and lovingly created items date from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. While the vast majority of native artifacts contained in museums worldwide are reservation period, forty of the 65 items illustrated in this book are dated prior to 1850. Thus it is an important link in understanding the evolution and development of native art and adornment from the time of early European contact.
The items in the Painter collection which are illustrated here include clothing, tomahawks, knives, bags, belts, jewelry, utensils, boxes and cradleboards, among others. The artifacts are illustrated in full color along with significant dimensions and notes regarding construction and materials. Additional comments regarding the importance and use of the items are included as well. A Window on the Past is the catalog for the exhibition Uncommon Legacies: Masterworks of Native American Art from the Peabody Essex Museum and was published by the Cincinnati Art Museum.
