Named after the Iroquois trapper Pierre Tevanitagon, Pierre's Hole, as the Teton Valley was then known, was located in the heart of the Fur Trade. Acclaimed by Jim Bridger as the "finest valley in the mountains," Teton Valley was abundant in beaver and the natural resources to support the beaver fur trade. A favorite site for the rendezvous of trappers, traders and native peoples, Pierre's Hole was witness to this pivotal period in early American history. Most of the notable personalities passed through the area, and author Jim Hardee uses numerous journals, diaries, ledgers and letters to tell the story of the Teton Valley.
Hardee's work is the first new comprehensive history of the region in almost 100 years. Hardee uses modern scholarhip and standards to document his account, avoiding the reliance on oral history and generalization that have flawed previous works. Pierre's Hole: The Fur Trade History of Teton Valley, Idaho is the definitive history of the region.
